Follow our planting instructions, plant bare roots of lily of the valley in autumn and harvest fragrant lily of the valley in winter!

1. Choose the Right Planting Time

Plant Lily of the Valley bare roots in early spring or fall for best results. Early spring planting allows the roots to establish before the growing season, while fall planting gives them time to settle in and develop roots before winter. Both times ensure robust growth and flowering in the coming season.

2. Select a Suitable Location

Lily of the Valley thrives in shaded to partially shaded areas with well-drained soil. Choose a location that receives dappled sunlight or is shaded for most of the day. Avoid spots with full sun, as excessive sunlight can scorch the delicate leaves and hinder flower production.

3. Prepare the Soil

Prepare the planting area by loosening the soil to a depth of 6 to 8 inches. Incorporate organic matter, such as compost or well-rotted manure, to improve soil fertility and drainage. Ensure the soil is slightly acidic to neutral, with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.0, to provide the optimal growing environment.

4. Plant the Bare Roots Correctly

Dig small holes 1 to 2 inches deep and space them 6 to 12 inches apart. Place the bare roots in the holes with the buds facing upward. Cover with soil and gently firm the surface to eliminate air pockets. Water the area thoroughly after planting to help the roots establish and encourage new growth.

5. Watering and Flowering Time

Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged during the growing season. Water regularly, especially during dry periods, to ensure the roots remain hydrated. Lily of the Valley typically flowers in late spring, producing fragrant, bell-shaped white flowers that add beauty and aroma to your garden. Expect blooms to appear about 4 to 6 weeks after planting in the spring.
